De inspiratie voor deze serie komt voort uit een foto van Thomas Dworzak (Magnum) die in januari 2016 geplaatst werd bij een artikel over de Europese vluchtelingencrisis in weekblad. De Groene Amsterdammer. Op de voorgrond liggen vluchtelingen. Het koude licht van de ochtendzon valt op een kindergezicht. Op de achtergrond staat een aantal agenten. Tussen agenten en vluchtelingen markeert een provisorisch plastic bandje de grens tussen waar de vluchtelingen zich mogen ophouden en waar niet. De foto laat enerzijds zien dat ongeveer alles een grens kan vormen; niet alleen een hoge muur of prikkeldraad, maar zelfs een dun plastic tape. Anderzijds markeert dit beeld het verschil tussen daar waar men is en daar waar men zou willen zijn. De andere kant van iets. Een ander gebied waar men een voorstelling bij heeft. Waarvan men verwacht, hoopt, denkt – kortom een vaag beeld heeft – dat het er beter is. Beide elementen heb ik in mijn foto’s willen leggen.
De serie is nog in wording en bestaat op dit moment uit een tiental foto’s.
The inspiration for this series comes from a picture from Thomas Dworzak (Magnum) that appeared in an article about the European refugee crisis in a Dutch magazine (January 2016). In the foreground refugees are sleeping. The cold light of the morning sun falls on a child’s face. In the background a number of policemen are on duty. Between them and the refugees a makeshift plastic tape marks the line between where the refugees are allowed to be, and where not. On one hand the photo shows that just about anything can form a boundary; not only a high wall and barbed wire, but even thin plastic tape. On the other hand this plastic tape marks the difference between where one is and where one would like to be. The other side of something. Another area in which they have an idea. Of which one expects, hopes, thinks – in short, has a faint image – that it’s better. I wanted to put both elements in my pictures.
