Plastified Nature bestaat uit vier series die plastics in de natuur als onderwerp hebben. De foto’s zijn gemaakt tussen 2013 en 2020. De aanleiding was een wandeling door een uitgestrekt natuurgebied in het zuiden van Spanje. Daar stuitte ik op een verlaten tuinderij. Al kilometers voor ik er was lagen kleine grijze en zwarte stukjes plastic in het zand tussen bomen en struiken. Dat werd meer naarmate ik dichter bij de voormalige kwekerij kwam. Daar lagen her en der resten van plastic potten en trays die na gebruik waren achtergelaten. Zon en wind hadden hun werk gedaan in het verspreiden ervan. De foto’s die ik onder de noemer Plastified Nature laat zien zijn niet per se een aanklacht tegen het gebruik van plastics in de agrarische sector. Wel heb ik kritiek op hoe plastic soms in de natuur wordt achtergelaten als het niet meer nodig is. Soms verbaas ik me ook erover hoe plastic de plaats inneemt van, c.q. een kopie is, van de natuur. Het is de aanwezigheid van dat plastic vervreemdend, maar soms schuilt er ook een zekere ‘schoonheid’ in.
In de eerste serie, Fields x Plastics, heb ik het gebruik van plastics in land- en tuinbouw gefotografeerd. In de serie Plastified Nature heb ik de tuinbouw onder plastic in Spanje als onderwerp genomen, maar daarbij vooral gefocust op het vervreemdende en spel van het licht met het plastic. De serie Fading Beauty laat zien hoe we bloemen en planten weten te vervangen door na-apers en hoe de natuur terug vecht. De laatste serie heet Wasteful Flowers en bestaat uit bewerkte foto’s. De boodschap die ik in deze serie heb willen leggen is wat door alle series heen speelt: plastic in de natuur kan een zekere schoonheid hebben, maar op de achtergrond speelt toch het aspect van de vervuiling.

Plastified Nature consists of four series that focus on plastics in nature. The photos were taken between 2013 and 2020. The reason was a walk through an extensive nature reserve in the south of Spain. There I came across an abandoned plant nursery. For miles before I got there, tiny gray and black pieces of plastic lay in the sand between trees and bushes. That became more the closer I got to the former nursery. There were scattered plastic pots and trays that had been left behind after use. Sun and wind had done their job in spreading it. The photos that I show under the title Plastified Nature are not necessarily an indictment against the use of plastics in the agricultural sector. I do, however, criticize how plastic is sometimes left behind in nature when it is no longer needed. Sometimes I am also amazed at how plastic replaces or is a copy of nature. The presence of that plastic is alienating, but sometimes there is also a certain ‘beauty’ in it.
In the first series, Fields x Plastics, I photographed the use of plastics in agriculture and horticulture. In the Plastified Nature series I have taken horticulture under plastic in Spain as a subject, but mainly focused on the alienating and play of light with plastic. The series Fading Beauty shows how we know how to replace flowers and plants with imitators and how nature fights back. The last series is called Wasteful Flowers and consists of edited photos. The message that I wanted to convey in this series is what plays through all the series: plastic in nature can have a certain beauty, but the aspect of pollution still plays in the background.
